It’s a close call for Rocco, as the Nasty Small Poodle hits the headlines.

Leaves are falling, the air is crisp, and early snow flurries are in the forecast. The annual autumn hunting season in Williamsport has arrived. Ginger Flynn, the 50-something publisher of the local newspaper, has planned a series of stories about hunting in cottage country. But when she stumbles on two corpses before the first interview, it’s obvious that more than wild game has been killed.

Sonny Rigg, a teenage delinquent with a long history of foolish shenanigans, is making a big effort to redeem himself. But he’s the number one suspect in the latest murder. Ginger is worried. She believes that instead of being the culprit, he’s likely the killer’s next target. Against their better judgment, Ginger and the reporters set out to clear Sonny's name and bring the real killer to justice.

Their task is complicated. Ginger and Rocco, her pampered prince of a poodle, end up homeless. A raucous moose-calling contest has unexpected results. And a murderer tracks Ginger and those closest to her.
